![]() ![]() “Scientists have invented a wealth of hardware-efficient, quantum error correction codes - each one cleverly designed with unique characteristics that can be exploited for different applications. “This universal entangler is critical for robust quantum computation,” said Yvonne Gao, co-first author of the study. In the study, researchers demonstrated the new technology by deterministically entangling encoded states in any chosen configurations or codes, each housed in two otherwise isolated, 3D superconducting microwave cavities. The entangling mechanism is called an exponential-SWAP gate. “It’s a much more sophisticated operation than what has been performed previously.” So I'm giving New Pokemon Snap 4.5 out of 5 rubber chickens.“We’ve shown a new way of creating gates between logically-encoded qubits that can eventually be error-corrected,” said Schoelkopf, the Sterling Professor of Applied Physics and Physics at Yale and director of the Yale Quantum Institute. It tickled the playful, awestruck side of me. After the first round I thought I was going to get bored pretty quickly, but the more I played the more thrilling I found it. ![]() ![]() RAD You know what, Gem? This one surprised me. I'm giving New Pokemon Snap 3 out of 5 rubber chickens. I had my fun - and it was fun - and now I'm done. Sure, you get different areas, but it's all essentially the same. I just didn't feel thrilled by my collection of photos, and it was too repetitive to me. GEM That is true, but I'm not sure how many more photos I'll be taking. But if you take enough photos, you will eventually reach diamond - the highest rating! RAD Yeah, I mean I know they've told me what makes a high scoring photo, but it still feels a bit random, and some categories seem to matter more than others. You can auto-pick which photos to submit, but I'd often look at them and think, "Why'd it auto pick that one? Surely this other one is better?" But I can only pick one so I will never, ever know. GEM What I found annoying was how unpredictable the photo rating feels. This is on console, why have a cursor instead of just selecting the next photo?! It's just so annoying. The story parts also feel pretty clunky - but not as clunky as the menu controls. RAD Yeah, I guess it's nice to feel like the very important photos I'm taking are contributing to something, but really, I'm just here to snap the Pokemon. Now normally I love a bit of narrative motivation, but if anything, it felt like it got in the way of what I came here to do: taking zoomed in pictures of Pokemon! There's also a bit of a story, about mysterious glowing Pokemon, but I could've done without it. As you progress you'll also unlock new areas and tools - like fruit you can throw to entice the little fellas to pose for the camera. There is a lot that does stay the same, which can get tedious at times, but there's enough new stuff to keep it interesting. I was squealing in delight when I saw a new Pokemon, or saw one do something different. You can level up areas by taking high scoring photos, which makes the resident Pokemon feel more comfortable and exhibit different behaviours. GEM It helps that things change with multiple runs, too. And you can only submit one photo of each Pokemon species each run, so the pressure is on! But after a while I found myself really getting into the groove, craving the elusive perfect Pokemon piccie. So it is very tricky to get the shot you're after. The pod feels like it drives too fast, while moving the camera feels too slow. I was really looking forward to flexing my photographic skills and getting beautiful wildlife shots. RAD At first I was a little disappointed that there wasn't more artistic flair. ![]() The perfect Poke-photo should have your subject's nice and big in the centre of frame, facing the camera of course! All in the name of science! At the end of your trip you show your photos to the Professor, and he'll give you a rating depending on how useful it is for research. You hop in a little pod, travel along a set track, and SNAP some photos of Pokemon. GEM Me neither, but by all accounts New Pokemon Snap follows the same footsteps. It's been over 20 years since the last Pokemon Snap, and like most GGSPeeps I never played it! RAD Uh, no! Darren! It's just me! I'm Rad!ĭARREN Oohhh Rad! You almost frazzled my circuits! I thought perhaps someone had pushed the Quantum Entangler and turned you into a Pokemon! You know, blend in.ĭARREN Alert! Alert! Wild Pokemon in the Spawn Point studio! Evacuate immediately! RAD Oh, I was thinking that if I put on this Grookey disguise, the other Pokemon will think I'm one of them and I'll be able to get a better photo. GEM Rad, what are you doing? We have to do the review. ![]()
